Ship and Ocean Engineering Valves

BAIRD
August 29 2025

Ship and marine engineering valves are special valves designed specifically for ships and marine environments, requiring corrosion resistance, high pressure resistance, and resistance to biological pollution to adapt to harsh working conditions such as high salt spray, high humidity, and deep-sea high pressure. The following are common types of valves and their application scenarios in ships and marine engineering:

1. Ship power system valves
Cooling water regulating valve: used in the engine cooling system to regulate the flow of cooling water according to operating conditions, ensuring stable operation of the engine.

Fuel delivery valve: adopts a sealed structure to prevent fuel leakage and ensure navigation safety.

High temperature and high pressure valve: suitable for ship boilers and steam systems, resistant to high temperature and high pressure, such as power station main steam valves.

2. Valves for seawater ballast and discharge system
Valve for ballast tank:

Bronze butterfly valve: used in ballast water systems, resistant to seawater corrosion, with quick opening and closing functions.

Quick discharge outboard valve: specially designed for ballast tanks, it can quickly discharge water bodies, prevent seawater backflow, and ensure ship balance.

Corrosion resistant ball valve: such as OMAL ball valve, made of corrosion-resistant alloy, suitable for seawater ballast tanks and desalination systems.

3. Deep sea and underwater valves
Deep sea hydraulic ball valve:

It adopts a pressure balancer design, suitable for deep-sea environments up to 3000 meters long, and can be remotely controlled through ROV (underwater robot) or umbilical cable.

Underwater ROV drive valve:

The deepwater valve provided by Neway has a design life of 20 years and adopts full metal sealing, suitable for deep-sea oil and gas exploration.

4. Ship safety and fire protection system valves
Fire extinguishing system ball valve: made of corrosion-resistant alloy, it can quickly close in emergency situations to prevent the spread of fire.

Emergency shut-off valve: used for fuel or hazardous medium pipelines to quickly cut off fluid in the event of an accident.

5. Special gas and ultra pure water valves
High cleanliness valve:

Used in electronic chip manufacturing to prevent metal ion contamination of ultrapure water or ensure zero leakage of special gases such as flammable and toxic gases.

Sanitary butterfly valve:

Suitable for food and beverage processing, preventing cross contamination and complying with hygiene standards.

6. Other specialized valves for marine engineering
Desulfurization tower butterfly valve: used in ship desulfurization systems, resistant to acid and alkali corrosion, suitable for high sulfur fuel treatment.

Ventilation valve (PV valve):

Used to regulate the pressure of cargo oil tanks and ballast tanks to prevent abnormal pressure inside the tanks.

7. Material selection and manufacturing standards
Stainless steel selection:

316/316L: resistant to seawater corrosion, suitable for ship pipelines.

Dual phase stainless steel (such as 2205): high strength, strong corrosion resistance, suitable for deep-sea high-pressure environments.

International certification:

Compliant with DIN, API, JIS and other standards, some products have been certified by classification societies such as DNV and ABS.

The selection of valves for ships and marine engineering should comprehensively consider the medium, pressure, temperature, and environmental corrosiveness to ensure long-term reliable operation.
